BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw Returns Home After Nearly Three Weeks in Pakistan Custody

In a significant development underscoring the complexities of border management and diplomacy, BSF Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw was repatriated to India on May 14, 2025, after being detained by Pakistan Rangers for nearly three weeks. The handover occurred at the Attari-Wagah border near Amritsar, Punjab, marking the culmination of intense diplomatic engagements between the two nations.

The Incident: Accidental Crossing on April 23

On April 23, 2025, Constable Shaw, serving with the 182nd Battalion of the Border Security Force, inadvertently crossed the International Border into Pakistan while on duty in the Ferozepur sector of Punjab. Reports indicate that Shaw was escorting local farmers to their fields near the border fence—a routine task known as "kisan guard" duty. During this operation, he mistakenly stepped approximately 30 meters beyond the Zero Line into Pakistani territory, where he was promptly apprehended by Pakistan Rangers.

Detention and Diplomatic Efforts

Following his detention, Pakistan confirmed Shaw's custody and assured Indian authorities of his well-being. However, the incident occurred amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed multiple lives. This backdrop complicated diplomatic efforts, with Pakistan initially unresponsive to India's requests for flag meetings and formal discussions regarding Shaw's release.

The situation evolved when, on May 3, Indian forces apprehended a Pakistani Ranger who had crossed into Indian territory near Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. This development provided India with leverage in negotiations, leading to reciprocal discussions about the release of both detained personnel.

Repatriation at Attari-Wagah Border

On the morning of May 14, 2025, at approximately 10:30 AM, Constable Shaw was handed over to Indian authorities at the Attari-Wagah Joint Check Post. The exchange was conducted with full military protocol and mutual respect, reflecting the professionalism of both border forces.

Simultaneously, India released the detained Pakistani Ranger, facilitating a reciprocal gesture aimed at de-escalating tensions and fostering goodwill.

Family's Relief and Political Reactions

Constable Shaw's family, residing in Rishra, West Bengal, expressed immense relief upon his return. His wife, Rajni, had actively sought assistance from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who, in turn, urged the central government to take tangible action for Shaw's release.

The Chief Minister's involvement highlighted the human aspect of such incidents and the importance of swift diplomatic interventions to resolve cross-border detentions.

Conclusion

The return of BSF Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw after nearly three weeks in Pakistani custody underscores the critical need for clear communication and established protocols between neighboring countries, especially in sensitive border regions. While inadvertent crossings are rare, they serve as reminders of the challenges faced by security personnel and the importance of diplomatic channels in resolving such incidents peacefully.
