Paris, May 28, 2025 — World No. 1 Iga Swiatek extended her reign at Roland Garros with a dominant second-round performance against Britain’s Emma Raducanu, securing a 6–1, 6–2 victory in just 79 minutes. The comprehensive win at Court Philippe-Chatrier marks Swiatek’s 23rd consecutive match victory at the French Open, moving her closer to what could be a fifth Grand Slam title in Paris.
Swiatek, the four-time Roland Garros champion and defending titleholder, was in full control from the opening game. She broke Raducanu’s serve immediately and raced to a 3–0 lead, showcasing her trademark precision, aggressive returning, and athletic court coverage. The Polish star needed just 36 minutes to claim the opening set, overwhelming Raducanu with a barrage of deep, angled groundstrokes and relentless pressure.
Raducanu, who entered the match as an unseeded player after advancing through the qualifying rounds, was appearing in her first French Open main draw since 2022. While her journey back from multiple injuries had been promising in recent weeks, her game on Wednesday lacked the consistency and power required to challenge Swiatek on her favorite surface.
Swiatek struck 32 winners to Raducanu’s 8 and broke serve five times throughout the match. Despite a brief surge from Raducanu early in the second set, including a hold to 2–2, Swiatek remained composed and reeled off four straight games to close out the match.
“I’m really happy with my performance today,” Swiatek said in her post-match interview. “Emma’s been playing well this tournament. I knew I had to be sharp, especially on my returns. I felt comfortable from the first ball and tried to keep the intensity high.”
With this win, Swiatek joins an elite list of players with extended unbeaten streaks at Roland Garros. Only Chris Evert (29), Monica Seles (25), and Justine Henin (24) have longer runs at the tournament in the Open Era. Swiatek has not lost a match at Roland Garros since 2021, further solidifying her dominance on clay.
For Raducanu, the match served as a learning experience in her continued comeback. The 2021 US Open champion has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons but showed signs of progress by reaching the main draw through qualifying. Despite the loss, Raducanu was positive about her performance and future prospects.
“Playing against Iga on clay is one of the toughest challenges in tennis right now,” Raducanu said. “She’s incredibly consistent and aggressive. I tried to stay with her, but I couldn’t match her level today. Still, it’s great to be healthy and competing at this level again.”
The British No. 1 will now shift her focus to the grass-court season, where she has historically found more success. Wimbledon is less than a month away, and Raducanu is expected to play several lead-up events to prepare for the third Grand Slam of the year.
Swiatek, meanwhile, marches on toward a potential fourth consecutive title at Roland Garros and fifth overall. She will face either Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic or Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu in the third round. With top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina also advancing, the latter stages of the women’s draw promise to deliver marquee matchups.
Swiatek's dominance in Paris has become one of the defining stories of this generation in women’s tennis. Since her breakthrough title in 2020, she has continued to improve her all-court game, while remaining nearly untouchable on clay. Her movement, tactical awareness, and ability to generate offense from defense make her a nightmare matchup, particularly at Roland Garros.
As the tournament heads into its second week, Swiatek remains the firm favorite to lift the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen once again. If successful, she would become only the third woman in the Open Era to win four consecutive French Open titles, joining legends Monica Seles and Justine Henin.
